Minka Farm, LLC

Minka Farm is a young family farm using sustainable, earth-friendly practices to raise pastured chickens and ducks for eggs, pastured beef, vegetables and orchard fruit. As a family, we decided that a strong connection to the land and the example of a good work ethic are important for ourselves. We are constantly learning about how best to keep our soil healthy and our animals happy while we grow our products for ourselves and our customers.
We have just expanded our market garden to a full acre and started a small CSA in the spring of 2010. Things are going well and we anticipate growing our CSA for the 2011 season. Our 3-acre orchard, which is now completely planted, has already begun to produce wonderful peaches, plums, apples, figs, persimmons, blackberries and blueberries
We are looking forward to pears, pawpaws, grapes, and pomegranates in the coming years.
We currently have a flock of 120 free-ranging laying hens, including Delawares, an heirloom breed. We will be breeding our own replacement Delawares starting this spring. Our birds are non-medicated and live outdoors in our cattle pastures. Their eggs demonstrate this lifestyle with dark, rich yolks and a wonderful flavor.
We also have a flock of laying Khaki Campbell ducks. These eggs are delicious and can often be consumed by people who are allergic to chicken eggs. They are used like chicken eggs, but because they have larger yolks, they are richer and give baked goods an excellent flavor and texture. The Khaki Campbell breed was developed in England by Adele Campbell in the late 1800's (making it an heirloom breed as well) to lay throughout the year. This is our first year with a large duck flock and so far, they have been quite impressive!
Our pastured beef herd is made up of Angus/Hereford/Gelbvieh purebreds and crosses. The animals live on pasture year-round. The babies are birthed in the field where they live with their herd. They are raised entirely outdoors on pasture with the addition of a small amount of grain for a short period prior to harvest to improve flavor without losing the benefits of grass-feeding. Our beef is now available by the fraction of a cow or by the cut. Please email for a price list!
Minka Farm loves to teach farming! Internships for the summer are available and provide housing, some food and a performance-linked stipend. Intern positions for 2010 are full so apply early for 2011. Contact us via email for more information.
