Johnny and Sharon Rogers
Sharon and I both grew up on livestock operations. We both pursued professional careers in the agriculture industry. However, since 2001 we have been farming full time. We enjoy the farm life and the people associated with agriculture. We started farming with what we knew about livestock and a little money.
Our cattle farm is a pasture-based herd that consists of purebred Red Angus, Black Angus and commercial cows. They are rotational grazed on pasture year round. We market our purebred bulls and heifers by private treaty sales. Most of our steers are used for our beef program. Our commercial heifers make excellent “momma cows” and our often purchased by other producers to add to their herd.
We added hair sheep to our operation in 2006. They thrive on grass that was under-utilized by the cattle. We market our spring born lambs in the fall and winter off the farm and at farmer’s markets.
In 2006 we began marketing our farm raised beef to consumers. This has been an educational and rewarding experience. It is wonderful to hear our customers rave about the quality of our beef. We develop our beef on pasture with some concentrate supplementation which consists primarily of soybean hulls. We do not use implants or feed through antibiotics/growth promotants. Currently we sell our beef products directly from our farm, at the Eno River Farmers’ Market, the Roxboro Farmer’s Market and the Cary Downtown Farmers’ Market.
