Coon Rock Farm is a sustainable family farm providing organically grown garden crops and pasture raised antibiotic and hormone free chicken, eggs, pork, lamb and goat on 55 acres nestled along a bend in the Eno River just outside of Hillsborough, NC. Our vegetables are mostly heirloom varieties and 100% organically raised. Our animals are heritage breeds that are pastured raised and grass feed and never given antibiotics or hormones.
The name Coon Rock is an old one that comes from a very large rock formation at the properties edge that juts out into the Eno River. It’s a landmark that all the ‘old-timers’ in Hillsborough know as many of then grew up swimming and fishing at the Coon Rock.
Coon Rock Farm has been a continually operating farm for over 120 years. Richard and his 4 children moved from Raleigh where Richard was a well-known software entrepreneur to the little house at the farm and have never looked back. We started small at first, providing vegetables to our own restaurant, Zely & Ritz. Today, we have over 5 acres of intense vegetable gardens, orchards, and ponds. The rest of the farm is in a combination of pasture and forest which is used to graze the animals and provide a wonderful habitat for wildlife and native plants.
We raise farmers hybrid pigs that we source locally from other local NC Choices farmers. They are raised completely on pasture and are an integral part of our intensive animal rotation plan. The pigs along with the chickens and ruminants provide most of the fertility for the farm’s garden crops and pasture grasses.
We process our pigs in a USDA processing plant into all the major cuts and sell direct from the farm to our retail and restaurant customers.
We have a 100 person CSA and also do a weekly email of what is available for sale each Monday to people who have subscribed to the farm listserv. We sell direct from the farm on Saturday mornings and at the Moore Square Farmers' Market in Raleigh and the Duke Farmers' Market in Durham.
